Tamia recently sat down with Kontrol magazine to talk Beautiful Surprise and some of her beauty and fashion secrets. Like we love the fact that she is into Brian Atwood shoes. He is one of our favorite shoe designers and we use his stuff a lot at Kontrol.

After a six-year hiatus, Tamia is back with her fifth studio album Beautiful Surprise, which is in stores now.
Her new album is described as a testament to Tamia’s love for life, music and everything in between.
The four-time Grammy-nominated R&B singer burst onto the music scene in 1994, at the age of 19, with her soulful debut single, “You Put A Move On My Heart.” Since then, she has released several chart-topping R&B anthems including “Stranger In My House, “Into You,” “Me,” and “Officially Missing You.”

She’s married to an American – pro basketball star Grant Hill – and has been living in the U.S. for years, but R&B songstress Tamia is still a Canadian gal at heart.
“I still claim it,” the talented singer says over the phone from New York City. “I do come up a lot. My family and roots are all still there.”

Tamia came by the studio to tell Power1051FM.com readers all about her sixth studio album Beautiful Surprise. The real basketball wife (wed to Grant Hill) tells us how she came up with the title of her album:
“The single, ‘Beautiful Surpise,’ was the last song I recorded for this project. Salaam Remi produced it and Claude [Kelly] and I were in the studio and he went into the booth and started writing and it became ‘Beautiful Surprise.’
“I really feel like that’s how the whole project came about. It happened very organically. It wasn’t like I decided, ‘let me take five years off.’ Time flies and I looked up and five years passed and it felt ready. I felt ready, like it was time to go in the studio. We did it and I love life’s little beautiful surprises.”
Tamia has two little girls, 5 & 10, and we asked if there was a favorite dish her kids love for her to cook:
“I’m a breakfast girl. I think anybody can kind of do breakfast. [Laughs] I’m not too sure they love my cooking. I take them to a restaurant.
“I don’t know if they’ve ever said ‘mommy can you make that.’ Maybe french toast, something I can do.”

Tamia’s 5th studio album (6 if you include her Greatest Hits), Beautiful Surprise is in stores now. The Canadian-born singer is on the road promoting the release. I sat down with Tamia for the very first time to discuss her longevity in the music game, how it is much harder for R&B artist now, dealing with her Multiple Sclerosis and how her husband has been a great role model for staying healthy, why she turned down starring in Basketball Wives, an upcoming tour, her love for Ms. Anita Baker and why we should support our living legends, how it is important for singers not to get “put in a box”, and how her relationship is not a “fairytale” story.
